  • ADT = Alternate Day Therapy = Every 2 days

Pharmacokinetics:

  • Vd = Volume of distribution = How much the drug can penetrate in different compartments of the body
  • WP = Withdrawal Period = Time before a Food producing animal’s goods can be sold again after administration of a drug
  • LWP = Longest Withdrawal Period = Longest WP indicated in the SPC for another species/indication to calculate off label use WP
  • FPS = Food Producing Species = Table 2 Drugs and AMEG A Antibiotics are Forbidden for them
  • hl = t1/2 = Half-Life = Time it takes to eliminate 50% of the drug dose
  • PAE = Post Antibiotics Effect = Antibiotics Effect Remains some hours after the elimination of the drug
  • Cpss = Plasma Concentration at Steady State
  • Cmax = Maximum Concentration
  • ppm = Parts Per Million = mg of Active ingredient / kg of Powder/Food/Premix
  • % (Solution): 1% = 10 mg/ml
  • CNS = Central Nervous System
  • BBB = Blood Brain Barrier = Lipophilic barrier protecting the brain from toxins (Including some drugs) in the blood
  • BMB = Blood Milk Barrier = Lipophilic barrier protecting the mammary glands from toxins in the blood
  • GI = GastroIntestinal (Tract)
  • ED50 = Concentration which is effective for 50% of the population
  • TD50 = Concentration which is toxic for 50% of the population
  • LD50 = Concentration which is lethal for 50% of the population
  • TI = Therapeutic Index = The bigger, the safer the drug (TI = TD50/ED50)
  • Renal / Hepatic / Cardiac patients = Patients suffering from Kidney / Liver / Heart failure > Impacting the metabolism and sensitivity to the drugs > Adapt dosage
  • AVM = Authorized Veterinary Medicine
  • Off label = Drug used outside the terms of its marketing authorization defined on the SPC (Summary of Products Characteristics)

  • Gr+ / Gr- = Gram + / - bacteria
  • LPS = LipoPolySaccharide = Wall of Gr- bacteria = Causes strong Immune reaction
  • MRSA/MRSP = Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus / pseudintermedius
  • PBP = Penicillins Binding Proteins = Transpeptidase and Carboxypeptidase Enzymes = Bacterial enzymes involved in the wall synthesis, targeted by β-Lactams Antibiotics
  • MIC = Minimum Inhibitory Concentration = Lowest concentration that inhibits bacterial growth
  • MBC = Minimum Bactericidal Concentration = Lowest concentration that effectively kills 99.9% of bacteria
  • MPC = Mutation Prevention Concentration = Lowest concentration at which even Resistant Bacteria won’t grow
  • MSW = Mutant Selection Window = Concentration between MIC and MPC where we risk selecting Resistant Bacteria
  • 30S = Small sub-unit of the Prokaryote Ribosome
  • 50S = Large sub-unit of the Prokaryote Ribosome
  • CST = Culture Sensitivity Test = Bacterial culture with Antibiotics to determine the strain and which Antibiotics work against it
  • YOPI = Young Old Pregnant Immunodepressed = Sensitive population
  • Chlamydia = Chlamydophila (Old name) = Genus of Gr- Intracellular bacteria
