Short acting Barbiturates
Dose:
Used IV (DON’T use perivascularly > Use IV catheter)
IM not recommended
For Anticonvulsives (Status epilepticus): 2-6 mg/kg IV (3-10 mg/kg)
For Euthanasia: 100-200 mg/kg quickly administered
Indication:
Main drug for Euthanasia: Only drug that don’t need prior anesthesia
Also used as Anticonvulsives
Effects:
Total unconsciousness
Muscle relaxation
Severe CV and respiratory depression: Euthanasia
Adverse effects:
Accumulation in adipose tissue: Careful disposal of the carcass
