Extended Spectrum Penicillins (Penicillins β-Lactams)

Is often combined with Clavulanic Acid (β-Lactamase Inhibitors) for companion animals
Given without Clavulanic Acid for Poultry (Forbidden to use with Clavulanic Acid)
Amoxicillin-Clavulanic Acid is Forbidden for Horses Orally (Dysbacteriosis)

AMEG C when combined with Clavulanic Acid

Good-excellent PO F
Feed has no impact on PO F

Drugs:

• Amoxicillin Sodium: Most water soluble, can be injected IV
• Amoxicillin Trihydrate: Less water soluble, can’t be given IV (Given PO, SC, IM instead)

Dose:

• Amoxicillin-Clavulanic Acid for Pyoderma (Skin Infections Therapy) of Dogs and Cats: 12.5 mg/kg BID
• Amoxicillin:
  • Treatment of Cystitis: 11 - 15 mg/kg BID-TID PO
    • With Clavulanic Acid: 12.5 - 25 mg/kg BID PO

Indication:

• Alone:
  • Swine and Poultry
  • Certain Respiratory infections
  • Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (Treatment of EPI)
• With Clavulanic Acid:
  • Companion animals
  • Oral cavity Infections, Bite wounds
  • Skin infections: 1st choice as well as Cefalexin (1st Generation Cephalosporins)
  • UTI
• Added with Gentamicin and/or Fluoroquinolones: IV
  • Life threatening infection such as Peritonitis and Septicaemia
